One of GUSTI’s key objectives is to build and encourage collaboration between industry with academia which will result in an ecosystem driven by knowledge, technology and innovation. Such collaboration will facilitate and motivate GUSTI’s member organizations to develop leading-edge industrial technology and advances that surpass current global standards.
GUSTI aims to bridge the industry and academia gap through communication and collaboration with the objective of creating experience-based competence. Such an approach offers many possibilities for fresh industrial engineers and researchers, and is a practical solution for competence-starved industry.
Today, Academic graduates are not seeking engagement with industry. Neither are they ready as their exposure to industry, practical competencies and experience-based knowledge is negligible even though they are theoretically sound. Engineering, just like medicine, needs practical training from the ground up to enable overall competence. This gap is best highlighted by the common situation where industry players have acquired high-tech capital goods but couldn’t use them effectively due to inadequacies of specifications, a lack of accessories and spares, poor training, and basic competence.

Industry on the other hand is not prepared to take on and develop, nurture and train fresh graduates as attrition rates are alarmingly high. The practical way forward would be to facilitate students to interact with industry from commencement thereby allowing them to evaluate career options in engineering before choosing a direction.
The availability of multiple tools, technologies and facilities in a single tactile environment would enable students to see, touch and work with it while energizing them into the wonderful world of engineering. Such an environment would be conducive to innovation. This would also lead to structured and motivated learning on the part of the students which would then transpose into:
- Higher competence in areas of their interest,
- Better options for employment, and
- Entrepreneurship in general.
GUSTI’s industry and academia ecosystem will break down barriers to innovation through its collaborative model. This will give industry the opportunity to develop, innovate, integrate, and apply advancements in knowledge. The resulting synergy leads to matchless technological innovation and transfer.
The objectives are to…
- Develop a rich collaboration R&D environment for industry and academia by working on mutual projects
- Encourage industry and academia to work together through joint projects
- Align R&D in GUSTI to the potential needs of the manufacturing industry
- Provide a world-class R&D facility within GUSTI with close access to manufacturing infrastructure
- Train, develop and motivate quality personnel and researchers within GUSTI member organizations through assisted educational programs
